Children At Danger From Healthscare Glassware

The US is reeling once again from a revelation about dangerous levels of cadmium and lead in novelty glasses, the latest in a series of scandals which has shown the real price of cheap goods. The main concern about this problem tableware is the danger such products pose to America's youth, and whether the offending products are being aggressively marketed to this at risk group. Early in 2010, dangerous levels of Cadmium were found in McDonalds ordered glasses. The fast-food giant swiftly ordered the recall of 12 million pieces of Shrek adorned glassware over the presence of the harmful metal.

Lead and cadmium have been locked in something of an industrial balancing act in recent years, particularly In the domain of children's jewellery. The US saw a massive recall of cheap metal jewellery in August 2009 because it contained dangerous levels of lead that could easily got onto skin where it could be potentially ingested. Regulation of Manufacturers resulted in the switch to the equally undesirable cadmium instead. Prolonged exposure to cadmium can result in severe bone loss, kidney disease and lung cancer. Recent investigations have discovered cadmium levels as high as 90% in the child-marketed jewellery.

Cadmium is used extensively in dyes, explaining the current concern over novelty glassware. One such pigment is the shocking primary red that goes into Coca Cola logos (among other marketable symbols). An American Associated Press report suggested that by merely touching one of the offending glasses twenty times, a six-year old child would easily exceed the US government's guidelines on harmful lead and cadmium intake. The most recent batch of offending glasses depict superman, wonder woman and the cast of classic MGM musical, the Wizard of Oz. The companies behind the manufacturer and sale of the items, Warner Bros. and Vandor, claim the items are not aimed at children. Whilst this is believable on some level, it's not a safe assumption by any means. These glasses aren't prohibited, adult only items like champagne glasses by any stretch of the imagination. Household items like glasses should always be assumed to be available to children, and regulated accordingly.
