WHY ARE DIESEL PICKUP TRUCK ENGINES, so much louder than a gasoline engine?
what make a diesel engine so dang loud? i had a car, with a gas engine, and high compression, 10 to 1, and it was not loud at all.
so, why is a pickup truck diesel engine, USUALLY, so dang loud.
First off, the diesel engine will have much more than 10:1 compression. Usually between 20:1 to 30:1.
The actual explosion of the diesel fuel in the engine is more violent than gasoline making the typical knocking or clattering noise.
The Cummins diesel in the new Dodge trucks takes a new approach to quiet this engine. The fuel is injected into the engine in stages during the combustion stroke. This makes the explosion less violent and quiets the engine significantly. You almost can not tell the sound of this engine from the Hemi gas engine.
